7.8 REG 262 Form (Vehicle/Vessel Transfer Form)
The REG 262 — the Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form — is one of the most frequently used DMV forms in the dealer business. It serves multiple purposes: it provides space for odometer disclosures, it can be used for reassignment of title when a vehicle passes through multiple dealer hands, and it supplements the title when additional documentation space is needed.
When completing the REG 262, accuracy is paramount. The VIN must match the vehicle exactly. The odometer reading must be recorded accurately, in the correct units (miles, not kilometers — and note if the odometer reads in tenths), and the appropriate certification must be checked: actual mileage, mileage in excess of the odometer’s mechanical limits, or not actual mileage. The names and signatures of both the transferor and transferee must be completed.
Dealers frequently use the REG 262 when “reassigning” a vehicle. If you acquire a vehicle and then sell it to another dealer without taking title in your name, the REG 262 provides the reassignment section where you document the transfer from yourself to the next dealer, including the odometer reading at the time of reassignment. This creates a continuous chain of documentation from the original owner through each dealer who handled the vehicle to the ultimate buyer.
Complete every field. Don’t leave blanks. A field left blank on a REG 262 can cause the DMV to reject the transfer, delaying registration for your customer. Take the extra minute to fill out the form completely and correctly the first time.
