10.8 Multiple Transfers
When a vehicle passes through multiple hands — from private party to dealer to another dealer to the retail buyer — each transfer must be properly documented. The title must show a continuous chain of ownership, and the odometer disclosures must show a continuous chain of mileage readings. The REG 262 reassignment sections are used when a vehicle passes through multiple dealer hands, allowing each dealer to document their acquisition and disposition without issuing a new title at each step.
The challenge with multiple transfers is that each transfer is an opportunity for an error — a VIN transposition, an odometer discrepancy, a missing signature. By the time the vehicle reaches the retail buyer, there may be multiple layers of paperwork, and an error at any layer can hold up the final registration. This is why accuracy at each step is so important. If you acquire a vehicle from another dealer and the REG 262 is incomplete or contains errors, get it corrected before you resell the vehicle.
