Beyond the Report of Sale and the title, there are numerous other DMV forms you’ll encounter in your daily operations. Let me highlight the most common ones. The REG 262 — Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form — is used for recording odometer disclosures and can be used as a supplemental transfer document when the title itself doesn’t have enough space for the required information. We’ll cover the REG 262 in detail in Section 7.
The REG 256 — Statement of Facts — is a multipurpose form used to provide DMV with explanatory information about unusual circumstances in a transaction. If there’s something about a transaction that doesn’t fit neatly into the standard forms — an explanation for a title discrepancy, a VIN correction, an explanation for a late transfer — you use a REG 256 to explain the situation.
The REG 343 — Application for Title or Registration — is the primary application form for original registration or registration changes. The REG 17 — Lien Satisfied/Title Holder Release — is used when a lienholder releases their interest in a vehicle. The REG 227 — Application for Duplicate or Paperless Title — is used when you need a replacement title because the original was lost, stolen, or damaged.
Familiarize yourself with these forms. Know when each one is needed and how to complete it properly. Mistakes on DMV forms cause delays, and delays frustrate customers. In Section 10, we’ll go through many of these forms in greater detail.
